Bay Area Professional Womens' Association
Established: 1992

I have been asked to write a short history about how our organization began, and its purpose. So here's my attempt to do just that.
Back in 1992 Kristina Kopriva and myself decided we needed to get together just for some quality "girl-time". You know, time away from significant others, family and work demands or just busy lives in general. We wanted a time where we could just be there with and for each other. Our first step in this direction was to decide to do something as simple as meeting for lunch... What a brilliant idea!!
What became immediately apparent to both of us was how much we really needed and missed the time we used to spend doing just "girl-talk". We both acknowledged that we needed a time to work things out that were taking up major space in our minds with other women, or sometimes the help of other "like-minded" women to make important "life" decisions; such as what to wear for the next glamorous function, or how to back-peddle our way out of an argument with our life-partners, or just to hang loose for awhile putting our day to day lives behind us. In other words, we realized we had been depriving ourselves of just hanging out and having fun doing girl-stuff with our own kind and it was an element of our lives we sorely missed!!
Well, at our lunch, and after a martini or two, we were having so much fun we decided next time we would invite a few more friends, and that became a few more, and a few more, and ... We now have, as of this date (May 2003) over 90 members.
The first ladies to join were Jeannie Anderson, and Michelle (Reeves) Fisher, and our first official luncheon was on Michelle's yacht. It was during this lunch, after imbibing a few bottles of wine, that we came up with our infamous name of "Sigma Cumma Cumma Kappa". So there you have it girls. It was from this day forward we have been proud to chant our associations name every chance we get!

I also want you to know, there is more substance to our group than just the pleasurable aspects of being with other "ladies-out-to-lunch". In fact, it wasn't long into our early development years that we learned that we were not only providing a fun, relaxed environment for camaraderie, we were also providing a "safe" environment for sharing our concerns, or even life-crisis issues... Bottom line, the bonus of our association with each other came from receiving "women's network support" towards making life-altering changes, or goal related achievements!
A great story with a wonderful outcome comes clearly to mind as I write our history... One afternoon our discussion circled around one of our members who had been keeping a secret for a very long time. The strength and confidence of our group was so uplifting that she took a chance and asked for our help. WE took immediate action! In a short period of time we moved her into a safe place so she could regain her dignity and strength to move her life away from the negative elements that were keeping her life from being one of joy, and onward to a more productive course to journey.
This is only one example. I can recall several more from the last decade. For you see, there has been many who have waltzed/boogied in and out of our group and many who are still with us that have definitely seen the benefits of being with other strong women. It's been our circle of supportive women that have given them the back-bone and will to move onward and upward when called for. No one needs ever to stand alone, and it's this underlying factor (support) of our group that I personally cherish, and encourage other members to contribute to and take advantage of.
Yes, we have a lot of fun, maybe too much fun at times, however, I've always wanted a place and time for ladies to be able to just unleash, unload, and feel okay to ask for help if they ever need to. SCCK represents this outlet for me and many other women. Whether the need be to resolve personal issues, or obtain assistance with promoting a business we are there for our women's network of SCCK members.
In closing, may I say, it's my personal feeling we can do it all because after-all, we are women, and we have proven time-after-time we can and do make a difference!
